Summary

The Story of Kullervo was written by J。R。R。 Tolkein when he was a student at Oxford。 It could be considered his "first work"。 It is a collection of stories based on his attempts to turn the Finnish epic poem Kalevala, into prose。It is a strange story and Kullervo is not a pleasant character。 Raised as a slave by the murderers of his father, Kullervo's tale is one of mistreatment and violence。 Is this a tale that a non-Tolkein reader will like? This was a very interesting read, though it probably won't be of much interest to the casual Tolkien reader。 This was Tolkien's first attempt to write a story, at first inspired to "reorganize" the story of Kullervo from the "Kalevala" since the original story jumped all over the place。 I'm assuming that's due to the oral tradition in which most mythologies are handed down over the ages。 When they're finally written down, there are all sorts of variations and even contradictions。 Kullervo seems This was a very interesting read, though it probably won't be of much interest to the casual Tolkien reader。 This was Tolkien's first attempt to write a story, at first inspired to "reorganize" the story of Kullervo from the "Kalevala" since the original story jumped all over the place。 I'm assuming that's due to the oral tradition in which most mythologies are handed down over the ages。 When they're finally written down, there are all sorts of variations and even contradictions。 Kullervo seems to have struck a chord with Tolkien, and we can only guess why now。 But he was so obsessed with it and with rewriting it, that he was nearly chucked out of school。 And you can see the germs of many things that will later sneak into other stories when he gets around to crafted Middle-earth, most notably Túrin, though they're very different characters。 Both tragic, both driven by trauma in their pasts, but Kullervo seems to almost delight in his evil, whereas Túrin keeps stumbling into it despite his best efforts not to。 I do appreciate that Flieger provided Tolkien's story as it was written without footnotes, or inserting/correcting name changes。 This way, I wasn't interrupted every other sentence with the decision to look at the notes now or later, and it also made it more clear how Tolkien gradually went from writing was was essentially fanfic to making it into his own story。 But I am glad I didn't skip the intro like I usually do, since I wouldn't have known why all these name changes were happening。 。。。 Well, that's not true。 I read the HoME。 I'm well familiar with Tolkien's name changes。 But Christopher took pains to keep the names as consistent as possible in the text, and noting the changes in the footnotes and commentaries。 So this was finally an opportunity to see the changes as they happened on page, which was a nice change。 But don't worry, there are notes and commentary at the end of each section。After the story itself comes two lectures that Tolkien wrote and gave on Kullervo and the Kalevala。 The second is largely based upon the first and more polished。 After those is a final essay the editor, Flieger, that goes over the differences in the Kalevala and Tolkien's version, and possible reasons why the story and character struck such a strong chord with a teenaged Tolkien。 。。。more

¿Has leído algo del autor? 。。。more

The book was not what I was expecting。 At first it is thought to be about small details about Tolkien's work, ultimately ending with the story itself。 But as I finished the story I was left with an uncertain thought due to the fact that the book continued to show an analysis on what Tolkien wrote。 Although it offers some information about the author that many readers surely appreciate, the rest of it, besides the story of Kullervo itself, seems to be repeated。 The book was not what I was expecting。 At first it is thought to be about small details about Tolkien's work, ultimately ending with the story itself。 But as I finished the story I was left with an uncertain thought due to the fact that the book continued to show an analysis on what Tolkien wrote。 Although it offers some information about the author that many readers surely appreciate, the rest of it, besides the story of Kullervo itself, seems to be repeated。 。。。more

Tolkien's version of the tale of Kullervo is a short section of this book。 While a grim story, one can see Tolkien's early musings that became his Middle Earth legendarium。 The story itself is worth reading, but for me, even more fascinating, was the rest of the book: his essays about the Finnish Kalevala, his musings about stories and folklore, and the lists of words and word origins that later fed into his Elvish languages。 A good book and a great insight into Tolkien's mind。 Tolkien's version of the tale of Kullervo is a short section of this book。 While a grim story, one can see Tolkien's early musings that became his Middle Earth legendarium。 The story itself is worth reading, but for me, even more fascinating, was the rest of the book: his essays about the Finnish Kalevala, his musings about stories and folklore, and the lists of words and word origins that later fed into his Elvish languages。 A good book and a great insight into Tolkien's mind。 。。。more

Let me first make it very clear that Tolkien’s actual 'Story of Kullervo’ (while unfortunately only being a mere 36 pages) deserves at the very least 4 stars。 It’s dark。 It’s tragic。 It’s brutal。 And I absolutely loved it。It’s all not completely of Tolkien’s own invention (as I originally assumed), but it achieved Tolkien’s original intent of the story: it sparked for me an interest in The Kalevala and Finnish folklore in general, which I previously knew nothing of。But like every “newly discover Let me first make it very clear that Tolkien’s actual 'Story of Kullervo’ (while unfortunately only being a mere 36 pages) deserves at the very least 4 stars。 It’s dark。 It’s tragic。 It’s brutal。 And I absolutely loved it。It’s all not completely of Tolkien’s own invention (as I originally assumed), but it achieved Tolkien’s original intent of the story: it sparked for me an interest in The Kalevala and Finnish folklore in general, which I previously knew nothing of。But like every “newly discovered” work of Tolkien that is not ‘The Hobbit’ or ‘The Lord of the Rings', ‘The Story of Kullervo' is regrettably unfinished, leaving us fans hungry for more and lamenting the epic that could have been。The detailed narrative of Kullervo ends at the climax of the story, and finishes with Tolkien’s brief synopsis of the ending。 Like I said before, this only takes up 36 pages of this 168 page book。 And so like every other book the Tolkien estate has published about Tolkien’s unfinished works, the rest of the book is just fillers。 Forwards, introductions, notes and commentaries, Tolkien’s essay on The Kalevala (including even the entire MANUSCRIPT DRAFT of the essay…and notes and commentary on the draft itself!), and more fillers。 Thus, I docked a star for this reason。 I understand this story was important in the development of Turin and 'The Silmarillion', but I personally don't need detailed (not to mention completely hypothetical) explanations of why Tolkien said or wrote certain things。 Sometimes Tolkien's thought process doesn't NEED a "factual" explanation or an answer (like how these experts can't understand why a devout Catholic such as Tolkien would be drawn towards a pagan folktale like Kullervo, and so suggesting that it must've been his loneliness in separation from Edith that struck a chord in him about the story or blah blah blah。。。c'mon, he was Catholic, not a Puritan。🙄) Sometimes the answer is very simple。 Sometimes we don't need an explanation at all。 It's that beautiful thing we call "mystery"。 And Tolkien's brain truly was a beautiful and mysterious thing。If you’re majoring in Tolkien studies then maybe all the droll extras are right up your alley。 But as a Tolkien fan just desperately looking for more Tolkien (while at the same time not entirely ignorant of his amazing intellect and the importance of his thought process and inspiration), I was ultimately disappointed with the fillers。 Not worth what paid for it。Regardless, it’ll still sit with my Tolkien collection and maybe be revisited again some day, but only for the actual ‘Story of Kullervo’ itself。 。。。more

At this point, I may have read everything from J。 R。 R。 Tolkien, and unfortunately, (in my opinion) it's time to let his work pass into legend rather than publish the work that was never completed。 The story of Kullervo is an adapted telling of an original story (or mythology) shaped and manifested into what could be considered his first attempt at making the 'hapless character' now what we would come to understand as Túrin Turambar from the middle earth story (or mythology)。 The work is incompl At this point, I may have read everything from J。 R。 R。 Tolkien, and unfortunately, (in my opinion) it's time to let his work pass into legend rather than publish the work that was never completed。 The story of Kullervo is an adapted telling of an original story (or mythology) shaped and manifested into what could be considered his first attempt at making the 'hapless character' now what we would come to understand as Túrin Turambar from the middle earth story (or mythology)。 The work is incomplete, and I am sad to say it is to its detriment。 The characters are not fully realised; the story is unfinished, where the rough idea is outlined but not complete。 This makes the reading experience rather difficult and stilted。 Understandably, a writer's musings and first drafts are often jumbled, filled with plot holes and have no real sense of self, just the beginnings of a tale。 Tolkien was no different; in some way, this book felt like work that was never meant to see the light of day。 The story is fine; if you're not used to reading tales of cruelty, you may find it endlessly harsh on the protagonist, but if you have ever read anything by George Orwell, or the brothers Grimm, a sad story with disastrous endings, it is nothing new。But unlike these other bodies of work, the story of Kullervo is not finished and so (again, in my opinion) should never have been published。 。。。more

Written similar to a Bible commentary which I didn’t love。 But it was cool to understand the folklore that influenced Tolkein。 The Finnish mythology is hard to grasp at times bc similar to Tolkein it’s very poetic and leans more into the flow more than the content。

The concept of the plot behind this story really pulled me in。 And being a huge Tolkien fan, it was interesting to read this piece where we can see him playing around with the idea of the “tragic hero”, which paved the way for some of his most iconic characters in his Middle Earth legendarium。 While it was a fun read in its current form, I continue to imagine what the final outcome this could have been of Tolkien had more time or desire to turn this into more of an epic。 Nonetheless, definitely The concept of the plot behind this story really pulled me in。 And being a huge Tolkien fan, it was interesting to read this piece where we can see him playing around with the idea of the “tragic hero”, which paved the way for some of his most iconic characters in his Middle Earth legendarium。 While it was a fun read in its current form, I continue to imagine what the final outcome this could have been of Tolkien had more time or desire to turn this into more of an epic。 Nonetheless, definitely worth a read。 。。。more

I never thought I'd give Tolkien such a low rating。 However, it's very early work of his (1914-1915), which shows in lack of editing, seeming unfinished-ness in places, and generally being hard to read。 I do think it is an interesting story, as it shows how Finnish mythology inspired themes and characters in his work, in this case specifically Túrin Turambar。 I never thought I'd give Tolkien such a low rating。 However, it's very early work of his (1914-1915), which shows in lack of editing, seeming unfinished-ness in places, and generally being hard to read。 I do think it is an interesting story, as it shows how Finnish mythology inspired themes and characters in his work, in this case specifically Túrin Turambar。 。。。more
